Dignity is no longer on the menu.
Here...
Progress is a good thing.
The law of the land we learned in kindergarten.
Human dignity is not for sale.
Dignity infrastructure — the community-owned tools, standards, and networks that help people know who and what they can trust, built so survival, safety, and belonging are something you're part of, not something you buy.
Penumbrella's invitation-only community — the Red Rover Alliance™ — is the first and only membership platform where people and businesses are chosen for their actual values, not the ones they claim in public or the ones written on their walls.
Currently in early development and accepting applications.
The Penumbrella Pact
The same principles we all learned in kindergarten. Turns out they scale to business just fine.
Be kind.
Treat everyone the way you'd want to be treated on your worst day.
Wait your turn.
Good things take time, and so do people. Advance on merit, not at the cost of others.
Share with your neighbors.
When there's more than enough, share. Resources, knowledge, opportunity, time — generosity compounds.
Treat others as you wish to be treated.
The oldest rule there is. Still the hardest. Still the most important.
Clean up your mess.
Own your mistakes openly, fix them completely, and leave every situation better than you found it.
Don't be a bully.
How we use whatever power we have — money, size, influence, platform — defines us more than how we got it.
The Red Rover Alliance™
The Red Rover Alliance is Penumbrella's membership program — invitation-only and built on the six rules. Every ally, whether a business or a human, earns their place the same way: pass the prescreen, complete the application, and you're invited in.
Human Allies
For people who believe in showing up for each other. Human allies gain access to a member-centric community of trust — invitation-only, with benefits that grow as the network does.
Community of Trust
A private, invitation-only network of vetted allies — people who've agreed to the same six rules.
North Star Index Directory In build
Certified allies and companies you can trust with your family and your community.
Resource Library
Curated guides for food, housing, healthcare, and legal aid — know your rights, know what to do.
On the horizon Planned

Business Allies
Companies ready to stand behind what they believe. Every Business Ally has a Human Ally at the helm — the values certification is personal before it is organizational. Businesses go through a rigorous application process, including an additional investigative verification phase, due to the level of influence and natural authority in their market presence.

Proof of Work
foodSOS.org™ was built in eight days during a government shutdown — a free emergency resource hub connecting people to food, shelter, medical care, and legal aid without requiring any personal information. Not food only. The name reflects urgency, not scope. Distributed through grassroots partnerships across Tennessee within weeks of launch.
Penumbrella is what that impulse is building toward.

Everything Penumbrella builds traces back to one of six pillars. Each names not just a value but a verb — what we do with it.
Three tenets hold it up — Decency, the baseline floor; Compassion, our answer to suffering; Consideration, thoughtfulness offered before anyone asks.
The people and relationships that constitute a network of genuine mutual support — not transactional, not performative, but rooted in shared values and reciprocal care.
Speaking up and showing up for the people and causes that need a voice — within the network and in the broader systems that affect how people live.
The conditions of physical, mental, and social health that allow a person to function fully — the material dimension of dignity infrastructure.
The commerce and contribution that sustains the network — values-aligned business, meaningful work, and the dignity of contributing what one can.
The sovereign right of every person to determine their own path — supported, not directed. The network enables autonomy; it does not prescribe it.
The wisdom and epistemic integrity that guides good decisions — individually and collectively. How we know what we know. How we tell the truth.
The Paradigm & Theory
Penumbrella is the Penumbrella Paradigm™ in action — the worldview that survival is a commons, not a market condition. That the conditions required for human dignity are infrastructure to be governed, not products to be priced.
The framework that makes this operational is Demarcation Hierarchy Economics™ — DHE™ — which draws a formal line between dignity infrastructure and competitive markets, treating them as distinct systems that require different rules, different incentives, and different governance structures.
"Maslow mapped six levels of human need. DHE asks: why does our economy treat all of them the same?"
Where conventional economics applies market logic to everything from food to healthcare to housing, DHE™ draws the line above Maslow's fourth level. Physiological needs, safety, belonging, and self-esteem sit outside the market by design. Only the top two levels — self-actualization and self-transcendence — are offered up to competitive markets. Everything below that line is dignity infrastructure. Everything Penumbrella builds sits at or below that line.
A below-demarcation domain exploited for above-demarcation profit is not efficiency. It is extraction. The Penumbrella Paradigm™ names it. The Dignity Stack and the Red Rover Alliance™ build the alternative.
DHE™ doesn't reject capitalism. It kintsugis it. The structure remains. The gold fills what was broken. What emerges is more valuable than either alone — a truly gestalt creation.
Only after this realization and acceptance can we finally kintsugi capitalism with compassion.
The world is already building it. From small French communes to American cities to national governments, communities across the democratic world are independently arriving at the same conclusion: some things are too important to leave to the market. In East Harlem, a mayor is reopening La Marqueta — the same site LaGuardia used in 1936 — as a city-owned grocery store. In Chicago, a 2024 feasibility study concluded a city-owned grocery was necessary and implementable. In Meulles, France, a community-run grocery operates on association governance. In Cairo, Illinois, a cooperative market restored food access where the private market wouldn't go. These initiatives share no common organizer, no coordinating body. They emerged independently because the problem is identical. The Penumbrella framework didn't invent this trend. It named it.
Two systems — public and community-governed — each independently capable, neither dependent on the other, exponentially more effective in tandem. When one fails, the other continues. When both operate, reach and resilience multiply. It's called Independent Complementarity™ — the architecture dignity infrastructure requires to survive.
The platform is being developed alongside academic advisors in distributed systems and economic theory. Scholarly partnerships and research inquiries are welcome.
Governed, not just branded
Every instrument clears an eligibility standard before it is built, and nothing earns a “validated” or credential claim until it passes an independent pilot — the validation gate. The instruments recognize patterns; the judgment stays with the person reading the result. That discipline, and an ethics review held apart from any licensing revenue, are part of the architecture, not an afterthought.
I·KEY for Work — a pattern-recognition read for workplaces — is in development.
The Dignity Stack — Ten-Domain Survival Cascade
Each domain enables the next. Eight build on FEMA's Community Lifelines; two — Information Sovereignty and Psychological Safety — are Penumbrella's, and the cascade order is ours.
Movement
Without the ability to move, nothing else is accessible.
Shelter
Protection before water can be stored or communication sustained.
Water
Three days. Non-negotiable.
Food Security
Three weeks. The floor of everything above it.
Energy
Everything else requires power.
Communication
You must be able to call for help before help can come.
Emergency Services
Activated by communication. The institutional response layer.
Internet Access
FEMA calls it a survival domain. Broader policy treats it as optional. That gap is the argument.
Information Sovereignty
The access layer for every other domain. Without accurate information, nothing is reliable.
Psychological Safety
The learned helplessness antidote. The domain that makes all others sustainable over time.
✦ Penumbrella originals. The other eight adapt FEMA's Community Lifelines; the cascade order is Penumbrella's.
Who's Behind It
Penumbrella was founded by Amanda Washington, a Tennessee-based communications and marketing strategist with two decades in emergency communications, political and advocacy work, and community infrastructure. Her background spans tiered, redundant emergency-notification systems; political and advocacy communications across federal, state, and local campaigns, PACs, and ballot initiatives; and building resource systems from the ground up when people needed them most.
The framework emerged from direct, lived experience with systemic failure — and a conviction that resilient alternatives are not only possible, but long overdue.
A stable dignity infrastructure breeds dependable allies. Penumbrella simply makes it happen.
